Tuesday’s primaries include the presidential and prosecutor races for Donald Trump’s election in Georgia

The presidential primaries, which Joe Biden and Donald Trump have already won, will be getting closer to ending on Tuesday.

Voters in two states, Kentucky and Oregon, will have a chance to make their voices heard by making symbolic decisions that will provide a few extra delegates to the national conventions and allow us to see where Democrats and Republicans stand in relation to their standard bearers.

Even after securing the nomination and losing their rivals, Biden and Trump continue to face opposition within their parties. Biden has faced outcry over his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas, while Trump still sees thousands of people voting for long-defeated rival Nikki Haley.

Eight presidential nominating contests remain after Tuesday: Democrats in Idaho, the District of Columbia, Guam and the Virgin Islands, and both parties in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.

Voters in Kentucky, Oregon, Georgia and Idaho also will hold state primaries on Tuesday to choose candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives and other contests. And in California’s Central Valley, voters will choose a Republican to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Republicans Vince Fong and Mike Boudreaux They will face off in a runoff election to end McCarthy’s term, with a rematch for another full two-year term in November.

In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the prosecution of Trump for 2020 election interference, faces challenger Christian Wise Smith in the Democratic primary. Smith is an attorney and author who filed a lawsuit against Willis four years ago.

The judge handling the case is also running for re-election. The nonpartisan race pits Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee against Robert Patillo, a lawyer and radio host. McAfee is a former prosecutor appointed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2022.

The seat is Oregon’s 5th Congressional District one of the top candidates in the Democratic primary in a country where Jamie McLeod-Skinner, the progressive candidate who ousted the moderate Democratic candidate two years ago, faced Janelle Bynum, a state attorney considered by some leading Democrats to be the stronger candidate. The winner will face first-term Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer in the general election, as both parties emphasize.

In Portland’s 3rd Congressional District, Democrats will choose a candidate to replace retiring Republican Earl Blumenauer in the secure Democratic seat. The candidates include Susheela Jayapal, sister of progressive US champion Pramila Jayapal. Susheela Jayapal faces two other well-financed Democratic challengers, state Republican Maxine Dexter and Gresham City Councilman Eddy Morales.
