Senator’s statement Vincent Hughes regarding the executive order of the Education Department: “SLAP in the face for students, teachers and parents”

March 20, 2025– Today, the Senator of the State Vincent Hughes, chairman of the Democratic Senate appropriations, issued the following statement in response to the executive commission President Trump, directing the secretary of McMahon to abolish the Education Department:

“Every transition to the abolition of the Education Department is a strike in the face of students, teachers and parents.

Once again, President Trump, Musk and Congress Republicans are trying to convince public opinion that limiting financing, services and jobs will lead us to the alleged golden age of America. The reality of their reckless and messy approach is that performing cuts of education will not cause learning to lose science, excessively expanded and burned teachers, larger classes, less resources for special education students, more toxic and broken school buildings, less technology in our classes and nowhere for students and parents, when they are discriminated against.

Pennsylvania has a court decision for appropriate and constitutional financing of 70% of PA schools. Any federal reduction of financing and education support will undermine our attempts to solve this problem. We need congress legislators from Pennsylvania to get up and fight for the education of our students. “
