Dream. John Fetterman (D., Pa.) X said on Tuesday that Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), President-elect Donald Trump expected election as Secretary of Stateis a “definite choice” and that he “looks forward” to voting to confirm it.
Fetterman’s stance is a occasional glimpse of Democratic support for Trump’s next cabinet.
Fetterman acknowledged in his post that “It’s no surprise that the other team’s pick will have political differences than mine,” but Rubio and Fetterman agree on one thing: sturdy support for Israel.
Both Rubio and Fetterman support Israel’s war against Hamas. Fetterman z with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this summer. Fetterman’s stance has caused tension among former progressive supporters who have been demonstrating against the war in Gaza since last year.
Rubio, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, compared the IDF operation in Rafah to the Allies’ pursuit of Adolf Hitler during the Holocaust. according to the Forwardan independent news organization aimed at the Jewish population in the United States.
Rubio’s nomination as the country’s top diplomat would require confirmation in the U.S. Senate, where Republicans have regained the majority.
Fetterman has been an outspoken supporter of remaining Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and after the election he told Semaphore that Democratic leaders who had pushed for Biden to withdraw should be “accountable for the outcome and consequences” of Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
He also criticized liberal voters for voting for Green Party candidate Leila Hazou instead of Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, who lost his re-election bid to Republican Dave McCormick in a tight race reported by the Associated Press last week. A recount is possible but unlikely to change the result.
A spokesman for McCormick did not immediately comment on the report of Rubio’s selection as secretary of state. Rubio campaigned for McCormick in Allentown a month before the election.
Who else will sit in the recent Trump government?
Fetterman’s post about Rubio appears to be his only message so far expressing support for any of Trump’s potential cabinet picks.
From Tuesday afternoon Trump knocked former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will become ambassador to Israel, U.S. Republican Mike Waltz (R-Florida) as his national security adviser and U.S. Republican Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as United Nations ambassador.
He also chose Stephen Miller, a senior adviser during the first Trump administration, to be his deputy chief of staff for policy and U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Tom Homan, who led U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during the first Trump administration, will be the “border czar.”
Throughout the evening, Trump made other choices, including naming billionaire Elon Musk and former GOP presidential primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, which aims to curb what those involved in the program see as wasteful spending.
Trump too expect you to choose South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Trump’s first major personnel decision was to appoint campaign manager Susie Wiles as his chief of staff.
