Facts over fear: The view from the left as Trump’s new term approaches

In 2025, we are not only entering President-elect Donald’s second term Trump ahead, but the “red wave” that unseated longtime Democrats like Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania after 18 years. So where is the left?

Some say Democrats are too liberal, too focused on “woke” politics and out of touch with the average person. Others say Democrats have tilted too right and failed to focus on issues essential to Americans in November’s election. Well, I think it’s time for us to focus on policies that focus on the two substantial H’s – health care and housing – and refocus the Democratic Party on ideologies that allow ordinary people to live their best lives.

I’ve talked a lot about the inequities that everyday Americans – regardless of their political affiliation – face in these segments, and what unites us is the reality that the cost of living is too high. People can’t afford rent, they can’t afford to buy a home, and health care has become so out of reach that both insured and uninsured people can no longer afford to get infirmed.

Democrats in office should push policies that support health care for all, housing policies that support both renters and homeowners, paid leave for all, raising the minimum wage to at least $25 an hour, ending the student loan crisis, supporting sensible gun reform, like as well as supporting campaign finance reform.

Until we repeal Citizen United and remove the super PACs that act as a shadow government where the government does the bidding of corporations, we will never see policies implemented that support us, the people. And that, my friends, is it fact.
