Senator Bob Casey slams ‘greed’ at Democratic National Convention

CHICAGO — Continuing the theme that first introduced last year, Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Bob Casey focused on “greedflation” — his term for corporate price gouging — during a brief speech at the Democratic National Convention on the fourth and final night of Thursday.

He described conversations with families about the rising cost of diapers. “Prices are going up because these corporations are trying to drive the market,” Casey said. “The people I talk to from Allentown to Erie, they don’t tolerate fraud.”

Casey’s GOP presidential candidate, Dave McCormick, criticized him for strictly following the policies of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. “Pennsylvania families are being crushed by the high cost of living because the liberal Biden-Harris-Casey agenda has failed them, yet career politician Bob Casey wants voters to believe it’s not his fault,” Elizabeth Gregory, McCormick’s campaign communications director, said in a statement.

Casey is seeking a fourth term in one of the most steep U.S. Senate races of the 2024 cycle. He raised $8.04 million in the most recent quarter, while McCormick raised $8.4 million, including $2.09 million of his own money.

Casey told the Capital-Star before the DNC that he has attended at least part of every other convention since 1992 — skipping the 1988 convention because he was taking the bar exam. He spoke at the 2008 and 2016 conventions.

Casey has endorsed Harris, who earlier this month selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate.

“I think people are attracted to both candidates because they present an optimistic, positive vision of the future,” Casey said.

McCormick was the only candidate for office in Pennsylvania to speak at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July.

John Cole of the Capital-Star contributed to this report.
