Harrisburg – – June 30, 2025 -Gen Senators State Senators (R-23) and Nick Miller (D-14) announced Plans today to introduce bilateral regulations that would limit the production, sale, distribution and use of fire foam containing per- and polyphluoralkilic (PFA) substances from 2026.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, PFA is a man -made chemicals that have been used in many products since the 1940s. Over time, chemicals can accumulate in an environment and human body, and studies have shown that exposure can lead to adverse health effects.
“Firefighters can face an extremely higher level of PFA exposure compared to other rescuers,” said Yaw. “PFAS pollution is a national challenge for public health, and this Act is a healthy reaction that has already been adopted by many countries. This Act will undoubtedly protect firefighters and at the same time protect our land and surface water from pollution.”
“Over the years, firefighters in Pennsylvania bravely protected their communities, facing multiple exposure to dangerous chemicals,” said Miller. “This legislation protects those who protect us. By limiting the use of harmful substances, we undertake meaningful actions to protect the long -term health of our first line heroes and prevention of penetration through toxins to eliminate our soil and polluting local water supply.
The legislators found that legislation is the result of extensive cooperation with fire brigades, rescuers and industry representatives from the time when the project was introduced in 2019. In 2019, the proposal would allow firefighting companies to benefit from funds to finance a firefighting company and medical rescue to cover the costs associated with the proper instruction of the foam set by PFAS. In addition, the Fire Brigade Commissioner will cooperate with the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania to provide responsible and solid environmental practice environments.
Yaw and Miller have noticed that the bill maintains an exception for objects where PFA -based foam remains crucial for safety, including airports, chemical plants, refinery and oil clamps or storage spaces supporting flammable fluids or natural gas.
