A member of the Media Borough Council, Joi Washington, can become the first woman and the first black person who led a very blue community because the district is open to the mayor for the first time in over three decades.
Washington won the democratic nomination for the mayor of the media in the unprofessed basic one on Tuesday. In November he will face Kevin Kellogg, a member of the republican community, who unsuccessfully ran to the mayor in 2021.
Washington’s nomination is a historical moment in the media and a turning point for the Delaware Favorry community.
According to the Historical Society of Delaware, Washington would be the first woman and the first person of the color that the media led since her establishing in 1850.
“I think it’s a nod to what people really want,” she said. “Also in the media people want change.”
She served in the commune council since 2022 and began a campaign after many years of democratic media mayor, Robert McMahon, decided to retire rather than look for re -election. She said that she was focusing on the possibilities of walking and lowering speed limits.
“People come to the media to get the opportunity to walk,” she said. “If walking is not safe, many people will not support companies or anything else here.”
Washington has a good chance of winning in one of the most urgent pockets of Delaware, although at this point it is not clear what the dynamics will be in the first open race of the mayor in the district.
McMahon, a democrat, has been the mayor of the media district since 1992. In his last re -election offer in 2021, McMahon won almost 1000 votes against Kellogg, earning almost 74% of the voices of the district.
Kellogg said, however, that he thinks that the race can be competitive because it has more name recognition than during the first gear, and the place is open.
“People like Change, and I think that after 30 years there is also another generation that live here,” said Kellogg, who operates on a concentrated platform on problems related to parking and supporting miniature companies.
