Pennsylvania Republicans can only wish it was a joke.
The latest Susquehanna Polling & Research poll shows the incumbent Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro has a 22-point advantage over the likely challenger from the Republican Party Stacy Garrity.
In a poll of 700 Pennsylvania voters, Shapiro received 58% support compared to just 36% for state treasurer. In the survey conducted March 18-29, five percent of respondents were undecided, with a margin of error of +/-3.7 points.
Pollster Jim Lee told PCN’s Capitol Preview that a 22-point lead at this point is “pretty massive.”
For Garrity, he said, the key to closing the gap will be securing resources – read, fundraising – to get Shapiro’s numbers below 50% by Election Day.
The problem becomes convincing GOP donors that she is still a candidate worth supporting.
The poll found that Shapiro strengthened his base, winning 95% of the Democratic vote while winning over more than 1 in 6 Republican voters (18%) who would typically support Garrity.
Shapiro is a popular governor among Pennsylvanians, with 56% of respondents approving of his job performance. The respondents also liked the way the voivode “presents himself”. President Donald Trump and 22% expressed their approval.
About half of respondents said they liked Garrity “because she was a Republican,” and 22% said they liked her support of Trump. One in five (21%) also said they liked its politics.
Shapiro defeated his GOP opponent Doug Mastriano by 15 percentage points in 2022
