Senator of State Sharif Street, chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, began his campaign on Congress on Tuesday, appearing as the son of the Hot Dogs seller, who became-Majork, who could bring his experience from northern Philadelphia to Washington.
US representative Dwight Evans, 71 years aged, who from 2016 represented the third Congress District in Philadelphia, announced on Monday that he would retire at the end of his term in January 2027.
This opened something that could be crowded and the main basic one for the most democratic district in Congress.

51 -year -old Street has long been observing the place and enters the race with appreciation of the name – his father, John F. Street, was the mayor of Philadelphia in 2000–2008. Sharif Street has been the chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party since 2022, and from 2016 he became the first Muslim person. Before elected to Statehouse, he worked as an employee in the Senate of Pennsylvania.
Street launched a website and an account on social media “Sharif for Congress” on Tuesday morning. On Monday, he praised Evans’s 45-year-old career in the chosen office and just said that on Tuesday he would be “whole” in the race.
Street represents northern Philadelphia and leaned in upbringing on his website.
“Growing up in the hood provided Sharif with a perspective, an experience that he used to develop a platform politicians that are personal”, His campaign website sounds. “But the sad reality is that people are struggling with the same problems throughout Pennsylvania.”
Street enters the basic race, which is in over 10 months as an early leader.
“He played well in politics. He created strong relations with community leaders, with other selected officials, with relationships. He is a known amount,” said Kellan White, a political consultant in Philadelphia, who worked here on presidential races and mayor. “His time as the chairman of the democratic gave him access to funds and is connected to national democrats.”
At the same time, White noticed that the rarity of an open basic in the city and predicted that a crowded field would appear.
“Every chosen official of a certain age who lives in the district, at least thinks about it,” said White.
Under the leadership of Street, the State Party achieved mixed success, largely following national trends. Democrats in Pennsylvania received great wins in mid -2022, only to lose the presidency and key seat of the Senate in 2024.
Last year, the turnout was still falling in the third congress district in Philadelphia, when President Donald Trump significantly improved his margins. The State House in Pennsylvania, however, was a uncommon dazzling point for democrats, because they were able to hang on a narrow majority.
Other pretenders
Several Street’s colleagues in Harrisburg have already indicated interest.
The representative of the state Morgan Cephas, representing West Philadelphia, said that he was considering running, like a representative of the state Chris Rabb, a progressive legislator from Mount Airy.
The party of the family family Pennsylvania also looks at the race and considers commitment, according to someone who knew about deliberations that are not able to speak publicly about constant internal conversations.
The party of working families elected two members of the City Council in 2023.
Two less known candidates submitted documents for the first time before Evans announced his decision.
Robin Tellens, a former employee of the city’s government, said Inquirer on Monday that he would prioritize to federal legalization of recreational marijuana in his campaign.
“Every country bordering Pennsylvania, with the exception of Western Virginia, legalized recreational marijuana. In the last five years we have observed hundreds of millions of potential income, when the general assembly stops,” she said. “This is money that we could use to finance SEPT, invest in our schools and build a more fair economy.”

David Oxman, 58 years aged, an intensive care doctor who lives in Bella Vista is also a candidate for the first time. He said that he thinks that there is an appetite for non -political at the moment when the health of the city and the country feels “attacked”.
“Thousands in this city soon lost insurance via Medicaid; this not only threatens them, but threatens the profitability of medical centers,” he said, referring to the federal account of budget reconciliation, which will reduce Medicaid financing. “… Thirty percent of jobs in the city are associated with MEDS and EDS, so talking to these problems from experience is very important and I think I could introduce something special to these conversations.”
Most Philadelphia is located in the third Evans Congress District and the second Congress District, represented by the American representative Brendan Boyle, Democrat, from 2015, both mandates historically belonged to the legislators who have been holding them for a long time.
“This is a safe democratic seat and will be safe for eternity,” said Larry Ceisler, public consultant in a city where Democrats exceed the number of republicans 6-1. The third congress district is even more democratic than the city as a whole.
“This is a kind of place where you want someone who intends to build a seniority so that he can help the city of Philadelphia,” said Ceisler. “This is not a place where you want someone who would like to apply for an office in the whole condition. You want someone who wants to be there 20 years.”
