
Allegheny County State Rep. Matt Gergely died from complications following a medical emergency that occurred while on vacation.
Gergely represented the 35th Legislative District, which consists of the towns of Clairton, Duquesne and McKeesport, the township of South Versailles, and the townships of Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, Munhall, Port Vue, Versailles, West Homestead, West Mifflin, Whitaker and White Oak.
The Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus announced his death on Sunday evening.
“We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Representative Matt Gergely and already miss him more than words can express. Serving in public office until the very end, Representative Gergely left an indelible mark on everyone who met him. McKeesport lost a great champion today. We wish his loved ones peace and comfort in mourning his untimely passing. May his memory be a blessing.”
The House Republican Caucus also released a statement following the news of Gergely’s death.
“We mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, Matt Gergely MP. Matt left behind a young family and we send them our condolences as well as our thoughts and prayers.
“Although Matt served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for a short time, his commitment to family and community was deeply felt among his peers, and he quickly gained friends and respect on both sides of the aisle. His voice and presence will be missed in both Harrisburg and southeastern Allegheny County.”
Gergely was elected to the House in a special election to succeed Lt. Governor Austin Davis in 2023 and was re-elected in November.
“Representative Gergely has dedicated his life to public service,” Davis said in a statement. “I witnessed his service firsthand as a McKeesport school official, city administrator, and finally as a state representative. He was a tireless advocate for working families in the Mon Valley. My heart goes out to his wife Holly, his family, friends and community. The Second Lady and I keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Gergely, 45, graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2002. He served as city administrator and chief of staff to the mayor of McKeesport Michał Czerepko from 2012 to 2017 and then as business manager of the McKeesport Area School District from 2017 to 2020. Before becoming a state representative, he served as McKeesport’s tax director.
He left behind his wife, Hollyand two sons.
