Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will be in the spotlight Wednesday in Chicago, expected to headline the third night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Walz, who was chosen over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential running mate, spoke to the Pennsylvania delegation Monday morning and he was booed by half the room for mentioning Warsaw’s rival, SheetzBut while emphasizing why he was chosen as the No. 2 candidate, Walz also shared what he noticed about Harris during their miniature campaign together.
“When you see Kamala Harris on the stump, you see her connecting, you see her leaning on her knee and talking to the kids, you see her petting that dog in the firehouse,” Walz said. (*3*)
Walz will be playing to his largest audience yet, more than 20 million people watching at home. Voters and potential voters are also likely to tune in on Oct. 1 to watch Walz debate Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.
“I can’t wait to debate this guy,” Walz said at a rally in Philadelphia earlier this month.

What is the full schedule for the 2024 Democratic National Convention this week?
The Democratic National Convention will take place over four nights this week, Monday through Thursday. The convention program is scheduled to air live each night from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET.
On the final night of the convention on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver her formal acceptance speech for the Republican nomination, a far different experience than the speech she gave at the 2020 DNC, where she was forced to address supporters through television screens at the height of the COVID pandemic.
What purpose do such conventions actually serve?
Although political conventions have largely grown into televised events designed to promote political parties and their leaders, conventions also serve to formalize the party’s agenda.
Typically, there is also a formal delegate vote to officially nominate a party’s presidential candidate, but Harris entered this week as the official nominee, thanks to a virtual delegate vote held earlier this month. Instead, Democrats held a ceremonial roll call Tuesday naming her the party’s presidential candidate.

Will Harris and Trump debate?
Harris and Trump have agreed to at least one presidential debate. It will take place on September 10 in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center at 9:00 p.m., hosted by ABC News. Here’s what we know about tickets to the event.
This isn’t the first time Philadelphia has hosted a presidential debate. Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford debated at the Walnut Street Theatre in 1976, the first televised debate since Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy’s celebrated 1960 showdown. The city also hosted the vice presidential debate between George H. W. Bush and Geraldine Ferraro at the Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center in 1984.
Trump proposed two more debates in September, but the Harris campaign rejected them. Instead, the Harris campaign said it was open to a second debate in October if Trump appeared on September 10.
