Six Democrats are challenging Perry in PA-10

The Democratic race to unseat U.S. Rep. Scott Perry (R-York) in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District has officially begun.

Six Democrats have filed nomination papers to run for the seat in south-central Pennsylvania.

Mike O’Brienretired Marine; Janelle Stelsonformer longtime anchor of WGAL-TV; Blake Lynchformer director of WITF; Shamaine DanielsHarrisburg City Councilwoman; Rick CoplenArmy veteran and Carlisle school board member; AND John Broadhurstbusinessman, submitted an application for the nomination of the Democratic Party in the primaries scheduled for April 23.

Bob Forbes, a retired Army sergeant and educator in the Harrisburg School District, and William Lillich, a disabled veteran and former truck driver, were on hand for the ceremony first Democratic candidate forum on January 13but failed to submit the necessary applications with signatures of registered voters by the deadline.

Perry, a former chairman of the conservative Freedom House Caucus, is currently serving his sixth term in Congress. He appears to have a clear path to his party’s nomination as the only Republican seeking the 10th District primary. John Henry Newmanformer professor, announced his candidacy for the Republican Party nomination last month, but did not submit the documents on time.

Perry was also unopposed for the 2022 Republican nomination, and two Democrats sought their party’s nomination in the previous runoff.

Seven candidates running for the seat in 2024 make it Pennsylvania’s most crowded congressional race this cycle.

Even though six Democrats have just filed paperwork to run for office, the fundraising race is on. Perry outperformed a crowded Democratic field in the last three months of 2023, although it spent more than any of its rivals in the same period.

As in previous cycles, national Democrats are targeting Perry’s race. Democratic Campaign Committee established Perry on the list of officials who will be unseated in 2024.

National ratings agencies also noted that the race could be close. Cook Political Report AND Inside the elections rated the race for the 10th Congressional District as “lean Republican.”

The deadline for circulating and filing nomination papers in Pennsylvania was Tuesday at 5 p.m.

February 20 is the last day to submit objections to nomination applications, and February 28 is the last day for candidates who have submitted nomination applications to withdraw.

The 10th Congressional District includes all of Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland and York counties.
