The District Prosecutor in Philadelphia, Larry Krasner, announced on Tuesday that he was running for re -election and will face a democratic nomination against Patrick Dugan, a former local judge.
But Krasner did not refer to Dugan. He spent much more oxygen on President Donald Trump.
Standing in the city of the media center available to the community and surrounded by a dozen selected officials, Krasner, one of the most notable progressive prosecutors in the country, he formulated as a local republican foil and maintained his attitude as a rebellious political external political, despite the fact that he is twice sitting.
He said that the national movement for the reform of the judiciary in criminal matters, which for the first time raised him to the office eight years ago “evolves in motion to save democracy.”
“We’ll make sure [Trump’s] A small plan to take over America is disappointing – said Krasner. “These choices are much larger than Philadelphia.”
Krasner did not provide detailed information about how he would use the office of the District Prosecutor in Philadelphia to repel Trump’s administration, and did not ask questions from reporters.
The campaign for the District Prosecutor screaming Krasner against Dugan, a more moderate democratic pretender, is the first local race since Trump’s office in January and one of the election competitions at Marquee, Pennsylvania this year. Before the basic May, Krasner advertises that the city has seen a historical decrease in violence using weapons and to expand its focus on the basic causes of crime, such as poverty and addiction.
At the same time, he tries to nationalize the local campaign, positioning as Trump’s main critic in Philadelphia.
Krasner spent the majority of his 30-minute event for the premiere of the campaign on Tuesday, dropping the president and his billionaire senior advisor, Elon Musk, though not by name. The District Prosecutor referred to the “unlawful president”, whom he said that he adapted to “fascist people with advisers on the right” and “friends devoid of apartheid”. Musk was born and raised in South Africa.
This is a known territory for Krasner, who has long been the vocal opponent of Trump and described the president and his movement in extreme categories. Krasner recently called the planned repression of the administration regarding the illegal immigration “Nazi”. He unsuccessfully sued Musk last year before the November election, saying that the billionaire gifts for Pennsylvania voters were an illegal lottery.
And Krasner gave national messages last year for issuing a strict warning during elections, which were widely perceived as addressed to Trump’s supporters, saying to those who wanted to get involved in having to acclaim the elections: “F around and find out”. Since then, he has placed this slogan in campaign shirts.
Trump’s team recognized Krasner and other progressive prosecutors as dangerous. Trump hit the Krasner as a soft crime, saying that he was “the worst district prosecutor.” And musk He said he could use his fortune to attack prosecutors – Like Krasner – in the past who were supported by the megadonor liberal George Soros. It is not clear yet whether any of the billionaires will get involved in this year’s race.
While the District Prosecutor focuses many of his messages on the national political landscape, Dugan had a different tone.
By announcing his campaign last month, the former judge of the City Court emphasized what he thinks would be a hyperlocal approach to crime, saying that he assigns prosecutors to individual districts and recruits lawyers with connections with the region. Dugan relied on his Fidach in Philadelphia, noticing his belonging to social groups and moving so far that he “hates Dallas Cowboys on his website.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dugan said that although the city’s murder rate fell, “people have not felt safe in our city for a long time.” Quoted Police statistics showing that some other crimes They are input in the year, including robbery, assault with weapons and retail theft.
Since he announced his campaign last month and suppressed himself with a more pragmatic alternative to Krasner, Dugan won support from the most influential trade unions in the city, including Philadelphia Building Trades and Construction Council, which represents 30 unions. The group, headed by the business manager Ryan N. Boyer, played a key role in the run of the mayor of Cherlle L. Parker in 2023.
Last month, Boyer said that building transactions “unanimously” supported Dugan.
But on Tuesday, Samuel Staten Jr., Local 332 business manager – Boyer’s Union joined Krasner. Staten said his local will of Krasner and “slamming everyone who disturbs.”
Boyer said that the local 332 is the only relationship in the building industry that supports Krasner and said that it simply reflects personal relationships and “differences in sentences.”
“People have different philosophies,” Boyer said. “We don’t run a dictatorship.”
A handful of selected officials, including the President of the City Council of Kenyatta Johnson, also joined the Krasner, in the program that he has support among some democratic power brokers in the city.
This is usually data for the best democrats looking for re -election. But the city party this year refused to support Krasner for the second time, despite the usually supporting the sought. Instead, the party leaders decided to have a basic open, which means that individual bosses of each of the city’s 66 political units will decide whether they want to support the candidate.
Krasner said then that the decision was “another sign that the rusty parts of the political machine did not want to be replaced with shiny.”
