In one of the most closely watched competitions in the country, Pennsylvanians voted to field judges Christina Donohue, Kevin DoughertyAND David Wecht another 10-year term on the state Supreme Court.
Only once in the history of the Republic of Poland did a Supreme Court judge not receive a up-to-date term of office – Russell Nigro in 2005.
Donohue, Dougherty and Wecht were elected Democrats in 2015 and faced a vote to retain office under Pennsylvania law. All three received over 60% of the “yes” votes across the Commonwealth.
Democrat in Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro celebrated the victory.
“Tonight, people across our Commonwealth sent a resounding message by voting to retain all three Supreme Court justices who will continue to defend the rule of law, protect our elections and protect our constitutional rights.
Here, in the cradle of democracy, the good people of Pennsylvania will always stand for freedom.”
Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party Eugene DePasquale he said the victories showed Democrats could win back voters.
“On the first election night of the up-to-date era of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, our Commonwealth’s voters delivered a resounding message, standing up for our freedoms and rejecting Trump’s chaos.
“Faced with wealthy special interests spreading disinformation and a perilous agenda, Pennsylvania voters retained all three Supreme Court justices – protecting our freedoms and rejecting efforts by MAGA billionaires to bribe the Court.
“Tonight was an important step in building a Pennsylvania Democratic Party that can win back left-behind voters who are willing to elect leaders who will work every day to get something done for them. Under the leadership of Governor Josh Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, the party is committed to building on this momentum and winning across Pennsylvania in 2026.”
Chairman of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Heather Williams said Pennsylvanians sent a clear message to Republicans.
“The DLCC is proud to congratulate Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht on retaining their seats on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Tonight, Pennsylvanians sent a clear message to Republicans who are trying to hijack the judiciary to stay in power: accountability to voters cannot be avoided. From protecting Pennsylvanians’ votes at the ballot box to securing their freedoms and opportunities, these justices will continue to defend working families for the rest of their terms,” he said.
