Pennsylvania’s Republican Party plans to support the candidate for the governor in September – almost half a year earlier than in the past – to learn from losses in 2022 and to employ his successes in 2024.
This support can probably be for the treasurer of Pennsylvania Stacy Garrity, who is to announce the offer of the GOP nomination to challenge the democratic governor Josh Shapiro.
Republicans are motivated after a successful election in 2024 in a country in which they traveled offices, reversed two domestic circles, displaced a long -term democratic senator, kept the majority in the state senate and helped President Donald Trump in victory.
During these elections, Garrita set Pennsylvania’s record in the field of votes for a state level with over 3.5 million votes cast for re -election as a treasurer, exceeding the record earlier Shapiro.
But the last governor’s race, which took place in 2022, did not go so well for the Republicans. This year, the state party did not support the candidate for the governor, and the senator of the Ultrakonservative State Doug Mastriano (R., Franklin) won the basic and lost the general elections to Shapiro by 15 points. The party also faced football losses.
The party historically supported the candidates in January or February of the election year, but decided to support the races 2024 in advance, said Greg Rothman, who was elected chairman of the Republican Party in Pennsylvania in February.
He wants to repeat it in the Governor’s Governor 2026.
“We had a pretty good model in the last elections in which we supported [Attorney General] Dave Sunday and Stacy Garrity i [Auditor General] Tim Defoor, but also Dave McCormick’s year, which gives candidates and time to unite to convey their message to voters, “he said.
Early support of the candidate can facilitate GOP avoid disordered clashes between intraparty, and can also facilitate the event to ensure that the leader is someone who, according to them, can win a state. Republican voters will choose the nominated in May in the next place, which will be carefully watched the governor’s race, taking into account the strategic importance of the state in presidential campaigns and Shapiro position in the national party.
Nobody officially announced the candidacy in the race, but Garrita is a clear leader to support now that the American representative Dan Meuser, who supported Trump, said last week that he is no longer interested in running. Garrita would be the first governor of the state if it escaped and wins.
“I had many conversations, almost regularly with the treasurer, and she is who will make this decision when he makes this decision,” said Rothman.
Mastriano said he was considering another run, but dozens of the best GOP leaders in this state encouraged Garrita to escape, and many claimed that they were opposing the Mastriano rematch.
Garrita was also popular when Meuser thought about the run.
Of the 267 participants of the survey at the GOP Leadership conference at Camp Hill in April, 41% said that he supported her as a governor’s candidate. Meuser had second support, at 9%, and four remaining potential pretenders received even lower, one -way interest.
Although for months they have become questions about whether he was planning to apply for the governor, she recently has been teasing about this role.
With a smile, she said that the state would choose the Republican Governor in 2026 in a speech at the April conference, stopping to absorb applause. She is confined from re -applying for the treasurer and noticed in a post on Facebook that “thinks about what would happen” when her time in the treasurer’s office was over.
In a statement on Monday she said that “she would soon announce the future of my career in service.”
Shapiro allies undertook an early GOP strategy at 2026 and Garrita’s potential to ensure early support.
Ryan Boyer, the leader of the Building and Construction Council Trades Council, published on Sunday a statement that a powerful relationship would employ the “full strength of our members and resources” to defeat GarriTy if he decides to escape, calling Shapiro “a friend and master” of working people. He also attacked her support for Trump and his controversial budget package.
“If the treasurer of Garrita makes a stupid decision to question our governor, he will never have the support of Philadelphia construction trade,” he said. “Even for a dog catcher.”
Relationship supported The Garrita re -election campaign for the treasurer in universal elections last year after a democratic treasurer candidate, Erin McClelland, publicly criticized Shapiro.
Garrita and Shapiro had a cordial relationship in Harrisburg, but if they start a governor’s campaign, he can check their room.
GOP He will organize regional clubs with straw polls before the meeting of the State College State Committee on September 19 and 20.
“If everything goes well, we will have a vote for 20,” said Rothman.
