Doctors within the borders.

Dr. Dave Oxman announced Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 3rd Congressional District and expressing his support for another doctor Unfortunately, Stanford.

Oxman, a critical care physician and professor at Thomas Jefferson University’s medical school, previously said doctors running for office could aid rebuild a Democratic Party that has “lost the trust of so many people.”

“During the darkest days of the pandemic – when far too much of the community was left behind – Dr. Stanford stepped forward and demonstrated extraordinary leadership,” Dr. Oxman said. “He brings the vision, integrity and independence we need to fight for these values in Washington. There are many great candidates in this race, but in Dr. Stanford I see the qualities we need most in Congress.”

After his departure from the race, seven candidates are still running for the nomination – Senator Sharif Street, Representatives Chris Rabb AND Morgan Cephas, Cole Carter, Karl MorrisAND Nader Griffin.

“Dave Oxman didn’t run this race because it was convenient,” Dr. Stanford said. “He entered this mission because his conscience demanded it. That’s a rare thing. And what he has just demonstrated – the courage and grace to say that the mission is bigger than any single candidate – tells me everything I need to know about him. I’m honored and I don’t take it lightly.”

Stanford has also been endorsed by Representative Dwight Evanswho announced that he is not running for re-election to the PA-03 seat he has held since 2017.

She said she was running for Congress to fight Donald Trump policies, whether it be cuts to health care programs or gutting funds for food programs, education and affordable housing, saying he needs an advocate to defend the support the city deserves.

“At precisely the moment when we need strong, experienced, science-based leadership in Washington, the Trump administration is doing the opposite,” Dr. Stanford said. “They are cutting up the CDC, gutting Medicaid, and trying to hire unqualified, untested people – a Secretary of Health and a Surgeon General who have no business making decisions about the life and death of the American people. Not only do I find it irresponsible as a doctor. I find it dangerous. Philadelphia deserves a voice in Congress that calls it exactly what it is.”
