Former President Barack Obama headlined an all-star gathering at Temple University’s Liacouras Center on Monday night, making the case for the audience to participate in voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Obama was closer after the speeches US Senator Bob Casey and Philadelphia Mayor Chelle Parker. Musicians John Legendgraduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Bruce Springsteen they played low sets and added their votes for the Democratic presidential candidate.
Obama energized the crowd for more than 40 minutes, offering his perspective on why Harris and not the former president Donald Trumpwas the best choice.
“I know who you’re voting for since you’re here,” he said, chuckling. “But I want you to talk to your family, friends and neighbors. Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the last day of early voting, so it’s worth planning to vote.”
He criticized Trump’s remark in the Sept. 10 debate with Harris, saying he spent four years trying to overturn the Affordable Care Act. And when he had the opportunity to tell the country what he would do to replace the ACA, he replied that he had a “concept for a plan.”
Obama talked about the strength that America draws from its immigrants and that Trump’s Sunday evening rally at Madison Square Garden showed the candidate that it is frivolous and unsafe.
Casey condemned the Republican candidate Dave McCormick as a Connecticut rug dealer and also attacked its coziness with China as CEO of the Bridgewater Associates hedge fund.
Parker kicked off the night and engaged the audience in a pair of interactive cheers, asking the audience to chant “One Philly” as well as asking the alpha for the group to say “Kamala Harris” and the other half to alternately chant “For the People.” “
