Montgomery County Auditor Karen Sanchez, who was elected to the position in 2015, will leave her position in the district at the end of the year.
Last week, the Abington Township Board of Commissioners appointed Sanchez, a business attorney, to fill the township’s vacant tax collector position. She will serve in this capacity until December 31, 2025, unless she seeks re-election.
During Thursday’s meeting of the Montgomery County Salary Commission, Sanchez said she had enjoyed her years as the county’s fiscal inspector, but made no mention of her fresh role.
“It’s just been a pleasure working with everyone in the county, across the county,” she said.
Meanwhile, her colleagues thanked her for her service.
“I had the pleasure of running with Karen last year. We know how important the controller’s office is. This is a key function of county government when we think about fiduciary responsibility,” said Jamila Winder, chairwoman of the county board of commissioners.
The district auditor is responsible for overseeing the district’s finances and conducting internal audits. Sanchez was elected to the position in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023. This summer, she was elected president of the Pennsylvania Association of County Auditors.
Under Pennsylvania law, Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, will appoint a successor to serve as Sanchez until the next election to the office in 2027.
