Senator Dave McCormick he’s not just getting his feet soggy as one of the newest members of the United States Senate. He jumps straight into the deep end.
McCormick will be named tonight as chairman of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism.
The subcommittee handles all matters relating to U.S. relations with countries in the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and Central Asia, as well as regional intergovernmental organizations. The regional responsibilities of this subcommittee cover all matters within a geographic region, including matters related to: (1) terrorism and nonproliferation; (2) crime and illegal drugs; (3) U.S. foreign aid programs; and (4) promotion of American trade and exports.
In addition, this subcommittee has global responsibility for counter-terrorism issues.
The announcement will be made later today by Senator James Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
“I am honored to chair a subcommittee dealing with such critical issues.” McCormick told The New York Post.. “I see this as a great opportunity to strengthen the U.S.-Israel alliance, expand the Abraham Accords, increase U.S.-India cooperation and delve deeply into regional energy, economic and security issues.
“I look forward to working with President Trump and my colleagues to deter the Islamic Republic of Iran, quell the terrorist threat and realize his vision for a more peaceful Middle East,” he said. “I hope that my experience and perspective will allow me to lead this subcommittee in a way that is good for Pennsylvania and the country.”
The panel was hosted earlier Senator Lindsey Graham (R.S.C.) during the last Trump administration.
Specifically, it focuses on “terrorism and nonproliferation,” “crime and illicit drugs,” “U.S. foreign aid programs,” and “promoting U.S. trade and exports.”
McCormick will also serve on the Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific and International Cybersecurity Policy, as well as the Subcommittee on Multilateral International Development, Multilateral Institutions, and International Economic, Energy and Environmental Policy.
He wrote on Twitter that he “looks forward to working with @POTUS, @SecRubio and my colleagues in the House and Senate to help advance U.S. interests and effect change in this critical part of the world.”
The newly elected senator made it clear that he also looks forward to working with Democrats Dream. John Fettermanannouncing earlier this month that the two had dinner with their wives and discussed how to “best serve” their state.
