Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a speech in Philadelphia on Saturday, amid growing calls for President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race.
This is Harris’ fourth trip to the Philadelphia region in the past few months. On May 8, she joined Abbott Elementary School star Sheryl Lee Ralph in Montgomery County to highlight reproductive rights, and on May 21, she delivered the opening remarks at the Service Employees International Union 2024 Convention. On May 29, Harris joined Biden at a rally at Girard College, a historic boarding school in Fairmount, aimed at bolstering support among black voters.
Saturday’s visit took on added significance after Biden’s disastrous debate performance with former President Donald Trump last month. Since then, Democrats have increasingly called for Biden to end his campaign, potentially paving the way for Harris to face Trump in the fall.
Biden’s campaign is Harris’ ‘silent test of strength’ against Trump in a head-to-head poll of voters, the New York Times reported. During a news conference Thursday evening, Biden pledged to stay in the race but said he would consider dropping out if his staff had data showing he couldn’t beat Trump.
Where in Philadelphia will Kamala Harris speak?
Harris is scheduled to deliver the opening remarks at the Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote Presidential Town Hall at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown on 17th Street. She is scheduled to speak at 3:45 p.m. and will not take questions from reporters during the event.
Her speech is being hosted by Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote, a nonprofit group that aims to raise voter turnout among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Harris, whose mother was born in India, is the country’s first Asian American vice president.
According to a campaign announcement, this will be her sixth visit to Pennsylvania this year and 16th since taking office.
Will there be any road closures on I-95 or elsewhere?
There will likely be periodic closures on I-95 and I-676 as the Vice President travels between the airport and Center City.
Delays and road closures are expected Saturday in the immediate area surrounding the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel, but police have not announced any specific road closures.
Will there be a live stream of Kamala Harris’ speech in Philadelphia?
Yes, you can watch the Vice President’s speech at the Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote Presidential Town Hall live here:
Donald Trump and Jill Biden will also be in Pennsylvania on Saturday
Donald Trump will hold a rally in western Pennsylvania on Saturday. The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Butler Farm Show.
This is Trump’s fifth visit to Pennsylvania this year and will be his last event before the Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee, which has led to speculation that he might announce his choice for vice president. Former Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s vice presidential running mate in 2016 and 2020, does not support the former president and has refused to advance a plan to overturn the 2020 election results.
At the same time, first lady Jill Biden will also be in western Pennsylvania, where she is expected to attend Sons and Daughters of America Italian Society Dinner in Pittsburgh.
The first lady is back under fire for defending her husband amid concerns about his age and the impact it could have on the 2024 election. She was a hero Vogue cover following last month’s debate, during which she said the campaign “will not let these 90 minutes define the four years of his presidency.”
