CHICAGO — In a second-floor conference room at the Westin Hotel next to Lake Michigan, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke Wednesday morning to about 80 New Hampshire Democrats, many of whom have extensive experience vetting presidential candidates.
“The reason I particularly wanted to be here this morning is because when New Hampshire is in power, you all know how to elect a president and how to get things done,” he told the state’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention.
He was introduced by state party chairman Ray Buckley, who said Shapiro had picked up his slogan for political productivity — “get things done” — from New Hampshire.
It was one of three breakfast appearances Wednesday for Shapiro, who appeared at the party’s national convention. His trip to the convention comes after weeks in the spotlight as the frontrunner to be Harris’ vice presidential nominee.
Shapiro praised Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who was elected over him, and said he would work difficult to facilitate them win Pennsylvania. He also spoke to delegations from Nevada and New Jersey on Wednesday.
Shapiro, who is known for his national political ambitions, will deliver a speech on the convention’s main stage Wednesday night. He spoke briefly from the convention floor Tuesday night to cast the Pennsylvania delegation’s votes for Harris’ nomination.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy also spoke at a breakfast in New Hampshire on Wednesday. As finance chairman of the Democratic Governor’s Association, he promised to do everything he could to facilitate elect a Democrat in the open gubernatorial race in the Granite State this fall.
Murphy identified himself as a longtime Red Sox fan, which he said “doesn’t win him any votes in New Jersey.”
