Vice President Kamala Harris is the only candidate seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, the Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday evening.
Harris was the only person to reach the 300-delegate threshold that petitioned to become the party’s nominee after President Joe Biden. withdrew his candidacy for re-electionwhich will officially prepare her to become the party’s nominee during virtual voting scheduled to begin Thursday, according to a DNC news release.
The DNC allowed party delegates to petition for a modern candidate after Biden withdrew. After winning the primaries and party meetings, Biden secured a huge majority of the 3,949 delegates pledged in the Democratic nominating process. Most of those delegates quickly pledged their support for Harris after Biden withdrew.
About 84% of Democratic delegates signed during the petition phase, with 99% of them supporting Harris. A total of 3,923 Democratic delegates filed a petition to make Harris the presidential nominee, according to the release, which named Harris the presumptive Democratic nominee.
“Democratic delegates from across the country have expressed their support by overwhelmingly endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic Party nominee,” DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison and Democratic National Convention Committee Chair Minyon Moore said in a statement.
Harris he gained support multiple state parties, elected officials and other party leaders within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing her. Candidates rumored to have presidential ambitions of their own quickly joined Harris, and several are still considered to be under consideration to run alongside Harris as vice presidential candidate.
Democrats virtual roll call — a departure from classic roll-call voting at the party convention, originally designed to ensure the party’s nominee would be on the Ohio ballot despite an earlier deadline that was later changed — will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. Eastern and end Aug. 5 at 6 p.m., the DNC said in a statement.

As confirmed by the Pennsylvania Capital-Star on Tuesday, Harris will launch her campaign on Aug. 6, the day after virtual voting ends, and her vice presidential candidate will be Philadelphia.

The commonwealth is arguably the most vital battleground in the presidential race, with Gov. Josh Shapiro reportedly on Harris’ shortlist for vice president. First-term governor and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer campaigned for Harris at a rally in Philadelphia on Monday.
Political reported that the Harris campaign will also include western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, North Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
Other Among the main candidates to run for vice president alongside Harris are Arizona U.S. Senator Mark Kelly and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as well as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, are also being considered.
