Elon Musk’s America PAC may target progressive DAs like Larry Krasner

Elon Musk wants his pro-Trump America PAC to target progressive district attorneys across the country, and Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner is likely on that list.

Musk specifically wants his PAC to challenge prosecutors who received money from billionaire George Soros – a prominent liberal donor and repeated target of right-wing conspiracy theories – or affiliates. The Washington Post reported last week. During his last run for district attorney, Krasner received support from a Soros-affiliated PAC.

Musk’s potential plans come at a time when Krasner – who reportedly intends to seek a third term – could face challenges from several other Democrats in the May 20 primary elections.

Krasner took office in 2018 and has supported his efforts to reduce mass incarceration and surveillance, decriminalize some minor crimes and overturn wrongful convictions, but Krasner’s approach has led critics to accuse him of being cushioned on crime, something Musk often complains about.

Musk promoted, among others: post on X last month which listed six district attorneys, including Krasner, who are “backed by Soros” and face re-election in 2025 or 2026. The billionaire owner of X found the list “interesting” and tagged the account X America PAC. Musk previously supported a failed attempt to oust a Soros-backed district attorney in the Democratic primary in Austin, Texas, – the Wall Street Journal reported in September..

Krasner declined to comment on Musk’s possible intentions to elect him and other progressive district attorneys.

While Musk’s plans are preliminary, these efforts dovetail with the billionaire’s intentions to remain in the political arena after the SpaceX and Tesla CEO spent a significant amount of time, effort and financial capital in Pennsylvania through America PAC to aid secure a key field battle for President-elect Donald Trump, something some Pennsylvania Republicans are giving him credit for.

Musk he said in a post on X on November 12 that his super PAC would “…continue to work increasing Republican registration numbers in key districts across the country in preparation for special and midterm elections.”

“And of course they play a significant role in the primaries.” he added.

Krasner could potentially face a crowded primary in May, exemplifying his status as a polarizing figure. His two-term term has been marked by several high-profile events and controversies, including last year’s attempted impeachment of him by House Republicans and Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro’s removal of Krasner’s prosecutorial jurisdiction in criminal cases under SEPTA in May.

But none made more national headlines than his now-abandoned in October, a lawsuit filed against Musk and America PAC, accusing the billionaire of running an illegal sweepstakes to give away $1 million to swing state voters who signed the super PAC’s First and Second Amendment petition.

Krasner’s lawsuit was the first legal action brought against the giveaway – which some election experts said appeared to violate federal law – but a judge denied Krasner’s request for an injunction to prevent Musk and America PAC from continuing to operate the lottery in Pennsylvania.

The tech mogul was heartily praised for his foray into Pennsylvania politics, which included donating millions of dollars to America PAC, holding town halls across the commonwealth and creating a “war room” in Pittsburgh. Musk has since staked his claim on Trump’s inner circle, becoming an honorary member of the Trump family, and the president-elect tapped him to co-lead the non-governmental “Department of Government Efficiency,” a commission charged with curbing government waste and spending, although details about the commission remain largely unclear.

Adjustment: A previous version of this article incorrectly listed the date for Pennsylvania’s 2025 primary election as May 20.
