Do Biden and the Democrats have a path forward?

June 27, 2024

A day that will go down in history as a disgrace.

How President Joe Biden he seems to have recovered from his disastrous debate with the former president Donald Trumpthere are a lot of questions about what might happen next.

Will Biden step aside and allow another candidate to carry the Democratic banner into November? Who would that candidate be… who could that candidate be? Will that be decided in the days after Biden steps down… or will it happen at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from Aug. 19-22?

All of this may turn out to be just speculation as Biden may continue to show determination and stay in the race.

What’s next?

Biden’s public appearances

Thursday night’s news conference was widely viewed as the most vital of the president’s political career. The stakes are high, and Biden’s every move, every sentence, will draw increasing scrutiny.

“While there is no doubt that anxiety is rising after the debate, we do not see it translating into a drastic change in the vote share,” he said. Jen O’Malley DillonBiden-Harris campaign chairman. “Actually, this morning, new ABC/Ipsos poll showed a draw, unchanged from April.

“Our path is focused on reminding voters that this election will be a choice between Joe Biden, who fights to grow our country and improve the lives of working people, and Donald Trump, who is focused on his own revenge and retaliation, with no concern for who he hurts.”

But for many, the damage has already been done. As one former Democratic Party official put it, “If he does push-ups on stage, it doesn’t matter.”

If Biden “passes” today’s test of his ability to do the job, the scrutiny will shift to his next public appearance… and the one after that. The question is whether he can regain the trust of Democrats.

Ten House Democrats have has already called on Biden to resign and many other people are considering such a step.

Who will take the keys?

Anyone with an elderly parent knows how difficult it is to take the car keys away from a child when concerns about their safety outweigh the desire to retain the freedom to drive.

There are many similarities in this analogy.

Biden will turn 82 fifteen days after the November 5 general election. Dwight Eisenhower was the first president to reach the age of 70 while in the White House, while Ronald Reagan he was the first to turn 70 during his first term.

Trump celebrated his 78th birthday on June 14 and if re-elected, he would become the oldest Republican president.

Experts say Biden has a close circle and only his wife, Jillhis sister, Valeriaand his son, Hunterhave a lot of influence on the 46th president.

However, the influence of Democratic leaders such as Senate Majority Leader Joe Biden should not be underestimated. Chuck Schumer (aged 73), Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (53) and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (84) hold.

Pelosi appeared to give Biden, who has been open about his desire to stay in the race, space during Wednesday’s appearance on Morning Joestating that “We all encourage him to make this decision because time is running out,” adding that he is “loved” and “respected” and “people want him to make this decision, not me.” When asked if she wanted Biden to run, Pelosi said, “I want him to do whatever he decides to do. And that’s what he is. Whatever he decides to do, we’ll do it.”

As pressure mounts on leaders to do what is necessary to keep the White House and the Senate majority while flipping the House, keep an eye on the trio. As contemporaries, Schumer and Pelosi could go to Biden and tell him his time is up, while Jeffries speaks for the younger generation of Democratic politicians.

Biden Steps Aside Before Convention: What’s Next?

If Biden decides not to seek a second term, it is assumed that Vice President Kamala Harris would be at the top of the ticket. She’s certainly in a good position to be a candidate, but she also has access to something no other Democratic candidate would have: $91 million.

This is the amount that the Biden-Harris campaign has raised through May 30 and belongs solely to the Biden-Harris ticket. So if Harris becomes the nominee, she will have immediate access to the funds and will not lose anything financially.

Any other candidate would have had access to funding from the Democratic National Committee and other pro-liberal groups, but they would find themselves in a much deeper financial hole than Harris did to begin with.

The Biden-Harris campaign could give the $91 million to a federal super PAC, which could spend it advertising the new Democratic ticket. That would be suboptimal, because the money in the outside group can’t be directly controlled by the campaign, and super PACs have to pay higher rates for ad time. But the money wouldn’t go entirely to waste.

Who might the candidate be similar to if he isn’t Harris?

Michigan Governor Gretchen Witmer he has already stated that she will not be a candidate to replace Biden. Other names mentioned as potential candidates include California Governor Gavin NewsomIllinois Governor JB Pritzkerwhile Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro his name was mentioned frequently.

Open convention?

Some are calling for an “open” convention in Chicago, with all possible options on the table, allowing delegates to have a say in the Democratic nominee. Even for that to happen, Biden would have to free up delegates to “vote their conscience.”

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) rules state that during the first round of voting, “All delegates to the National Convention who have pledged their support for a presidential candidate shall reflect in good faith the views of those who elected them.”

In the second and each subsequent round of voting, “all obligated delegates and automatic delegates will be able to vote for the presidential candidate in all subsequent rounds of voting until a candidate is elected.”

An “open” convention would see the full reveal of the diverse factions of the Democratic Party.

Biden Steps Aside After National Convention: Now What?

DNC rules include the ability to fill vacancies on the national ticket due to the death, resignation or disability of a candidate after the National Convention adjourns.

“The National Chairman of the Democratic National Committee will consult with the Democratic leadership of the United States Congress (Schumer, Jeffries) and the Democratic Governors Association (New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy(chairman) and reports to the Democratic National Committee, which is authorized to fill vacancies.”

However, there is no specific deadline by which the DNC must make a choice.

When will it be too behind schedule for Pennsylvanians to change the candidate on the statewide ballot?

overview Pennsylvania Election Calendar for 2024 reveals two key dates: August 12 and August 27.

The first date is the deadline for candidates nominated in the primary election to withdraw. The second date is the deadline for the Secretary of the Commonwealth to send each of the state’s 67 counties a list of all the candidates they will vote for in the November election.

As with the rest of the country, military ballots will be mailed out shortly thereafter. The deadline for voters to print and mail ballots to those who requested them is Oct. 22.
