On Tuesday, the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association voted to elect Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis as its chairman. The move followed a significant defeat for Democrats in the general election, which ranked first across the country.
“The next few months ahead for the party will take a lot of work to regain voter trust and develop an agenda that speaks directly to the country,” Davis said. “We will continue to deliver results for working Americans and act as a backstop to the Trump administration’s extreme agenda.”
Davis also said he wants to aid “rebuild the Democratic brand.”
“As the Democratic Party faces a crossroads, our Democratic lieutenants will continue to defend fundamental freedoms and work to improve the lives of working families,” said Juliana Stratton, executive committee member of the Democratic Lieutenant Governor’s Association.
The association elected Kim Driscoll of Massachusetts as vice president.
“At DLGA, we have a tremendous opportunity to invest in and build the next generation of leaders for our party, and I am excited to be a part of paving the way for a successful future,” Driscoll said.
Davis has served as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor since 2023. In this capacity, he also chairs the state Senate. Before becoming lieutenant governor, Davis served as a state representative for the 35th District in Allegheny County. He is the youngest lieutenant governor in the country and the first black lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania.
There are currently 19 Democratic Party lieutenant governors across the country. The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association also consists of members from American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as three members who are next in line to governor but are from states that do not have the position.
