A state senator is leaving Harrisburg to lead Dave McCormick’s U.S. Senate office in Pennsylvania.

The state senator from Lancaster County will leave his term two years early and will become U.S.-elect Dave McCormick’s state director.

State Sen. Ryan Aument (R-Lancaster) will lead McCormick’s U.S. Senate offices across Pennsylvania, McCormick’s campaign announced Tuesday, as he assembles his key staff and prepares to take office next month.

Republicans maintain a solid 28-22 majority in the state Senate, which Democrats had hoped to tie this year, which ended in a banner year for the GOP. But Aument’s vacancy in the Republican-backed district will give Democrats a chance to try to flip the seat in a special election. These competitions are often characterized by low attendance.

Aument was an early supporter of McCormick during his first run for the U.S. Senate in 2022. Both are U.S. Army veterans. Last weekend, he sat with McCormick at the Society of Pennsylvania dinner, which concludes the annual trip of Pennsylvania’s political elite to New York.

Aument, 47, has served in the state Senate since 2015. He was last elected to represent part of Northern Lancaster County in 2022 and has two years left on his term. He most recently served as majority whip for the Harrisburg GOP caucus.

“Ryan, an Army veteran, has been a fantastic representative of Lancaster voters and Republican majority whip, and I am very grateful that he will bring his deep experience serving the people of Pennsylvania to this new role,” McCormick said in the release.

It is unclear when Aument will resign from office and who will run for the remaining two years of his term.
