The first special election has been set for 2025.
Lt. Gov. Austin Davis announced Tuesday that a special election will be held on March 25 to replace state Sen. Ryan Aument in the 36th District.
escalate he resigned in December to a novel position as state director in the office of U.S. Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA).
“I wish Senator Aument all the best in his new role serving the people of Pennsylvania as Senator McCormick’s state director,” Davis said. “It was great working with him in the Senate, and I hope we can continue to work together on state and federal issues.”
The race to succeed Aument is already on. Lancaster on the Internet reports that state Republican Brett Miller, Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons, teacher Steven Heffner and retired truck driver Brad Witmer are all running for the nomination of the Republican Party for this position, while Matthew Good, a former school librarian, is so far the only candidate seeking the nod for the Democratic Party.
Most recently August won re-election in 2022 in a Republican-friendly district, defeating Mike Miller in the GOP primary by 20 points. He was unopposed in the general election.
The winner will serve until the end of Aument’s term, which ends in 2026.
Despite vacancies, Republicans still have a slim majority in the state Senate.
