Pennsylvania has three of the 10 closest U.S. House races in 2024

We said it would be tight.

According to data compiled by Jakub Rubaszkin internal elections “ultimately it came down to control of the US House of Representatives a group of voters smaller than the crowd at a high school football game in Texas. And in at least one respect, 2024 was the closest race for control of the House in recent history.”

As the evening began, Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation was 9-8 in favor of the Democrats. But when the dust settled, the Commonwealth’s congressional results showed the GOP with 10 seats and the Democrats with just seven.

Three of those races in the state were among the 10 closest in the nation, according to Cook Political Report data.

In the 7th district of the Lehigh Valley, Ryan Mackenzie defeated the incumbent Democrat Zuzanna Dzika just over 4,000 votes to flip the spot and take 7th place.

Incumbent Republican Scott Perry stopped the challenger Janelle Stelson just over 5,000 votes in the 10th Capital District to retain his seat in the eighth-closest race.

And in NEP, Rob Bresnahan he toppled a six-term Democratic incumbent Matt Cartwright by a majority of about 6,200 votes to flip the spot in the contest, which finished ninth among the top 10.

According to Rubashkin: “Although the next 10 races were split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, the broader picture suggests that Democrats actually avoided the possibility of suffering a more serious loss. Of the 68 races that were won by less than 10 percent, Democrats won 43 and Republicans won 25.”
