President-elect Donald Trump appears to have improved his margins in the enormous majority of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, and as of Wednesday afternoon, he is expected to flip several counties he lost in the 2020 presidential election.
As of Wednesday afternoon, according to unofficial data, Trump was leading Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, in 58 Pennsylvania counties. In the 2020 presidential election, Trump won 54 Pennsylvania counties, losing to Democrat Joe Biden by just over 80,000 votes.
The four counties where Trump leads today but lost in 2020 are Bucks, Erie, Monroe and Northampton.
All votes are still unofficial.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Trump leads Harris by 512 votes, or 0.1%, in Bucks County, which received more than 95% of the vote. In the previous election, Trump lost the county to Biden by 17,345 votes, or 4.3%.
If Trump maintains a razor-thin lead in Bucks County, it will be the first victory for a Republican presidential candidate since George H. W. Bush did so in 1988.
Trump overtook Harris by 3% in Northampton County, located in the Lehigh Valley and widely considered the best bellwether in Pennsylvania, with more than 95%. During the 2020 election, Biden carried the county by 3%.
Northampton County was the only county in the state The 2020 election in which all candidates for statewide office won.
During Trump’s successful 2016 bid for the White House, he also slightly flipped Northampton County, turning it from red to blue from the previous presidential election.
Erie County is also seen as one of the best chiefs in Pennsylvania. Trump outperformed Harris by 1.5% in the county and carried more than 95% of the results. Biden won the county by a 1% margin in the 2020 election.
Trump also won Erie County during his 2016 campaign, turning it around from the 2012 presidential contest when Barack Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney.
Monroe County in the Poconos also appears to have won Trump’s 2024 election. He leads Harris by 1.1% in that county with more than 95% of votes counted, while Biden carried Monroe County by 6.4% in 2020.
If Trump holds on to victory in Monroe County, it would be the first Republican victory in a presidential election since 2004.
