The most vital story
1. Pennsylvania voters worry about the toxicity of politics
“In a tight presidential race, Pennsylvania, with 19 electoral votes, will most likely emerge as the winner. And the state that Donald J. Trump winning in 2016 and President Biden in 2020 by a narrow margin is up for grabs.
This is evident in Berks County, located about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia, where thriving Democratic suburbs blend into conservative rural Pennsylvania.
The mountains and low hills that make up most of the county are dotted with small towns and farms, and the county seat, Reading, is the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania with a large Latino majority.” (New York Times)

Total spending in the Casey v. McCormick Senate case approaches $300 million. “The U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania has become the political equivalent of what Cold Warriors come to know as mutual assured destruction – the principle that any nuclear attack will be countered to such a degree that both attacker and defender will be annihilated.” (PennLive)
The presidential election will likely be held in Pennsylvania. And it’s really close. “Are you suffering from anxiety and deep uncertainty about the upcoming Tuesday elections? Let me comfort you: no one else knows what will happen either. (WESA policy)
Why this ‘ultra competitive’ Lehigh Valley House race could predict the presidency. “Susan Wild and Ryan Mackenzie are using dueling strategies to align themselves with unpopular national figures and causes in the final days of the race to represent Pennsylvania’s 7th District.” (Questioner from Philadelphia)
Republicans are asking a Pennsylvania court to suspend its decision on the absentee ballot envelope rule. “The state and the national Republican Party filed an emergency motion asking the justices to stay a Commonwealth Court ruling that said envelopes used by voters to mail absentee ballots do not have to be precisely hand-dated, as required by state law.” (AP)

5. Ping! Harris and Trump have been blowing up our phones with political text messages in the final days of the campaign
“On the radar for millions of Americans Kamala Harris AND Donald Trump campaigns and their allies, you are just a text message away from the apocalypse.
As some texts say, and many others suggest, the very future of the republic is at stake. But you – yes, YOU, Sally, Jose or enter your name here – can write it down. For just $7.
Texting is a cheap and easy way to reach potential voters and donors, without all the rules designed to maintain fairness in traditional paid TV advertising. Both sides are working hard on the SMS flow. In the final days of the campaign, the phones may ring incessantly.” (Morning talk in Allentown)
