U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-8) has outraised Republican challenger Rob Bresnahan by $1 million over the past three months in what has become Pennsylvania’s most costly congressional race this cycle.
Cartwright’s campaign raised $2.16 million from the beginning of July to the end of September, however Bresnahan raised $1.16 million during the same period.
Cartwright’s Q3 result was missed head the state’s congressional delegationbut no candidate running for the United States House of Representatives in Pennsylvania raised more in this campaign than he did. The Lackawanna County Democratic campaign has raised $7.83 million in the election so far.
Bresnahan’s campaign has raised $3.73 million, which includes a total of $1.2 million in loans to his campaign. He collected more votes than any other Republican challenger in Pennsylvania this cycle.
Since October, Cartwright and Bresnahan’s campaigns have raised a combined $11.55 million, more than any other congressional race in the Keystone State this cycle. The closest is the $9.44 million total raised in the race for Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District between U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-1st District) and Democratic challenger Ashley Ehasz.
Cartwright also significantly outspent Bresnahan over the past three months – $4.79 million compared to Bresnahan’s $1.16 million, campaign finance records show.
In addition to raising the most money, Cartwright and Bresnahan collectively spent more than any other congressional race in the state. At the end of the third quarter, Cartwright and Bresnahan’s campaign spending totaled $9.79 million. The closest race will be for Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District between U.S. Rep. Susan Wild and state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, who has a combined total of $7.87 million.
According to AdImpactthe 8th Congressional District race featured the largest total advertising spending, including outside political action committees, than any other U.S. House race in the country.
Cartwright has a significant cash advantage over Bresnahan, and he has more than he had over Republican challengers in previous election cycles. Cartwright entered October with $1.91 million in cash, while Bresnahan’s campaign had raised less than $465,000.

Cartwright is the only Democrat serving in the state’s congressional delegation representing a district won by former President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020. The 8th Congressional District includes the city of Scranton, which is President Joe Biden’s childhood home.
