Biden and Trump score Super Tuesday victories as expected as down-ballot races take shape

Hundreds of delegates were at stake in the Super Tuesday presidential primary, which included 15 states and the U.S. territory of American Samoa. While former President Donald Trump won the lion’s share of delegates, Republican challenger Nikki Haley pulled off an upset for the second time in recent days Vermont. President Joe Biden extended his winning streak, including: Iowa which announced the results of the first correspondence contest for Democratic presidential preferences.

In Colorado and Maine, the former president easily won the nomination and delegates. Both states had disqualified Trump from the Republican Party primary elections due to his role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection, but was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.

Biden and Trump also won North Carolina, but the most watched race in the state was the gubernatorial primary. Voters fielded a wide range of candidates vying to become the state’s next governor in what is expected to be one of the most hotly contested and high-priced gubernatorial races in the country. Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, a MAGA Republican with Trump’s endorsement, will face Attorney General Josh Stein, who led all candidates in polling and fundraising in his first term.

Here’s a look at the other states that hold primaries on Super Tuesday:

Alabama: The Democratic primary in the newly drawn 2nd Congressional District has ended in a runoff between former Justice Department official Shomari Figurs and Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels. The district’s GOP primary appeared to be heading in the same direction as the night had gone. Redistricting also changed 1st Congressional Districtforcing two Republican incumbents to face off – U.S. Rep. Barry Moore of Enterprise defeated U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl of Mobile.

In the State Supreme Court, Associate Justice Sarah Stewart defeated former state senator Bryan Taylor in the Republican primary for chief justice. In November, he will face Judge Greg Griffin, a Democrat who ran unopposed. This race attracted modern interest after decision about the embryo in mid-February which threatens in vitro fertilization in the country.

Alaska: Republicans are organizing a caucus to elect a presidential candidate with 29 delegates at stake. The remaining races will be decided in the August primary election. Results were expected sometime after midnight East Coast time.

American Samoa: The US territory of American Samoa continued its tradition of bizarre primary election results, giving the majority of votes to a little-known Baltimore businessman, Jason Palmer. – reports the Associated Press. Palmer, who reportedly campaigned in person on the remote Pacific island territory, received 51 of 91 votes cast, with Biden receiving the rest. The territory that gave former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg his only victory in 2020 will send six delegates to the Democratic convention this summer, but residents will not have a vote in November’s presidential election.

Arkansas: The Democratic and Republican presidential primaries took place Biden and Trump as expected. In Third Congressional DistrictRepublican Steve Womack, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2011, won against Arkansas Sen. Clint Penzo. Plus two state Supreme Court seatsincluding the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, were up for grabs.

California: California Democrats overwhelmingly backed Biden, with 90.5% of early returns leading Associated Press to arrange a race for him. Republicans backed Trump with 74.7% of early returns, – AP reports.

Democrat Adam Schiff won the most votes in two U.S. Senate elections, – reports the Associated Press. In the race to fill the slow senator’s unexpired term, Dianne Feinstein led former Republican baseball player Steve Garvey 34.0% to 31.4% in early returns. He led Garvey 36.8% to 29.7% in the race for a full six-year term beginning in January 2025. Under the open primary system, the two candidates who receive the most votes will advance to a runoff in November, after eliminating the remaining candidates, including Democratic Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.

Members of the House of Representatives, candidates for state legislative positions, candidates for county supervisors and bonds worth $6.38 billion supporting mental and behavioral health treatment and combating homelessness. Oklahoma: Biden and Trump cruised to victory in Oklahoma, where the presidential primary was the only statewide election. The AP called the major party races shortly after polls closed.

Tennessee: Trump easily defeated the Republican primary ca 78% of the votesdespite significant spending and a recent campaign in the state for Haley. Biden had no opponent in the Tennessee Democratic primary, but he only won 92% of the vote, with the rest choosing “uncommitted.”

Texas: As expected, Biden and Trump won their Texas primary, earning the second-largest delegate prize. But more fascinating races in America’s biggest red state have been sidelined. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz easily won the Republican primary, but Democrats chose him as their running mate in a national press push to maintain their Senate majority. According to AP, US Senator Colin Allred of Dallas won the Democratic primary.

Utah: Biden easily defeated four rivals in the Utah primary, – AP reports. With more than half of the votes counted, Biden had 88% of the votes. The state has a total of 34 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, allocated based on the percentage of votes received by each candidate.

Republicans and two smaller parties organized caucuses. Republicans also conducted a “presidential preference survey” simultaneously with the caucus. The poll will select a candidate from among 40 delegates to the national convention. The club will not elect delegates to district and state conventions until later this summer. GOP polling results, which were due before midnight East Coast time, were still pending.

Vermont: Vermont was a glowing spot for Haley and only a slight bump in the road for Trump. It was the first state Haley won, stopping Trump’s lead in the Republican primary. Biden easily won among Democrats.

Virginia: Biden and Trump faced lightweight competition and easily won the nominations. The primary election for Virginia’s only contest this year for Democrat Tim Kaine’s Senate seat will be held in June.
