Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa condemns the Treasurer’s refusal to provide increased security at the Governor’s Mansion

HARRISBURG, PA – In response to State Treasurer Stacy Garrity’s letter denying approval of funds to improve the security of Governor Shapiro’s residence, Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa makes the following statement on behalf of the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Caucus:

“It is unacceptable that Treasurer Garrity would refuse to provide resources to ensure the safety of the Governor and his family. Toying with the lives of the Shapiro family for lowly political purposes is completely inappropriate behavior on the part of the Treasurer, especially in light of the April 2025 attack on the Governor’s home during Passover. The security advisories issued by the Pennsylvania State Police are unfortunately absolutely necessary as political violence continues to plague our public conversation, and the Treasurer’s disregard for the prevention of future violence is downright necessary.” “disgraceful. We cannot and must not exploit the lives of our leaders and their families, regardless of party or upcoming election. The attempt by a lone public official to take over the Ethics Act, overrule the decisions of the State Ethics Commission at his discretion, and bend state law to his will sets a very dangerous precedent at this time. This decision is completely lawful.”
