Senator Nick Miller Announces Funding to Expand Old Allentown Tree Initiative; Community encouraged to participate in Planting Day

April 22, 2026 – The Old Allentown Conservation Society, along with Union and West End Cemeteries, will host a Tree Planting Day on Saturday, April 26, at 9 a.m. at 10th and Chew Streets, planting 44 up-to-date trees in the Town of Allentown.

Senator Miller (D-Lehigh/Northampton) secured $25,000 for the Old Allentown Preservation Association, which supports community development and historic preservation. Part of the grant will be used to plant trees next Saturday.

With Senator Miller’s support, the Old Allentown Conservation Society leveraged the city’s federal tree grant and doubled the initiative. This project is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (PA DCED) with support from the City of Allentown and the Allentown Shade Tree Commission.

“Planting new trees improves the air quality and public health of our residents. This investment allows us to provide lasting results for the residents of Old Allentown, one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods,” he said Senator Miller. “I encourage residents to join the tree planting campaign to create a greener, more vibrant neighborhood that will benefit future generations.”

“The Old Allentown Preservation Association would like to express its sincere gratitude to Senator Nick Miller and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their generous support of this important initiative. This investment reflects a shared commitment to strengthening our community through thoughtful stewardship of our urban landscape,” he said Chris Brown, board president of the Old Allentown Preservation Association. “Trees planted this weekend will provide lasting benefits for decades to come – enhancing the beauty of our historic district, expanding the urban envelope, improving air quality, supporting stormwater management and supporting natural habitats. Regardless of the weather, this Saturday will mark a significant and visible transformation as much of Old Allentown will be renovated for Earth Day.”

Old Allentown Preservation Associationmission is to support the Old Allentown neighborhood and its residents in working with partners to maximize resources for community development, engagement and historic preservation.
