Ana Tiburcio won the special election for the 22nd Legislative District for the remaining term Josh Siegelwho resigned as Lehigh County executive.
Tiburcio defeated Józef Leckenby67-33 to win the Allentown District seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and facilitate maintain the Democrats’ one-seat majority in the chamber.
The owner of A&M Tax & Services and Allentown School District (ASD) board member was a plurality vote-getter in each precinct, earning 1,474 votes to just 717 for Smith.
Overall turnout was disappointing, as only 6.9 percent of 32,737 registered voters chose to elect a representative.
In response to Tiburcio’s victory, DNC chairman Ken Martin issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump and the Republicans’ out-of-touch billionaire agenda is leaving working families worse off than ever before – and Pennsylvanians have had enough. Tonight, Pennsylvanians are once again putting their faith in sturdy Democratic leaders like Ana Tiburcio and Jennifer Mazzocco who are fighting to lower costs, protect health care, and build a better future for every family. Their victories today are yet another warning sign to Republicans that their toxic agenda has no place in Pennsylvania Democrats have momentum as we continue to win elections in up and down and extending our power throughout the Commonwealth and across the country.”
The 22nd Legislative District includes all of East Allentown, parts of Center City Allentown and three districts on the eastern side of Salisbury.
