HD-79: Verobish selected as GOP candidate in special election to replace Schmitt

The Blair County Republican Committee has made its selection Andrea VerobiszCongressman’s field representative Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-15), as his candidate in the March 17 special election for the 79th Legislative District.

A special election will be held to replace the previous one Rep. Lou Schmittwho resigned from the House of Representatives after winning a seat on the Blair County Court of Common Pleas in November.

“I am honored to receive the nomination from the Blair County Republican Committee tonight,” she said. “I appreciate this opportunity and I’m willing to put in the work to win.”

In a statement, the chairman of the committee Matt Zupon expressed confidence that Verobish “will build on the commitment, effectiveness and community-focused leadership that Schmitt has demonstrated during his seven-year tenure in the General Assembly.”

Prior to working with Thompson, Verobish served on former state’s staff Senator John H. Eichelberger. A graduate of Gannon University, she is married with two children.

On January 24, Blair County Democrats will hold a nominating convention to choose their opponent.

The winner of the special election will serve out Schmitt’s term, which expires on Nov. 30.
