The most essential story
1. Will Pennsylvania’s economic recovery lend a hand Kamala Harris reach a key swing state?
“The latest comprehensive study of Pennsylvania’s booming economy was almost surprising in its promise. The Working Pennsylvania report, released just before Labor Day, found that the state’s economic output was “well above” pre-pandemic levels, the unemployment rate was near a 50-year low, workers’ bargaining power was high and working-class families shared in the prosperity of more sustainably than at any time since 1980.
“Historically, if someone had told me it would be the numbers — jobs, economic growth, the stock market, falling inflation and all of these things — I would have said, ‘Wow, screw the incumbent party,’” he said. Krzysztof Borykdirector of the Public Opinion Institute at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. “And they are Democrats.” (Questioner from Philadelphia)

Obama and Springsteen boost Harris at Georgia rally, warning of ‘brutally grave’ consequences if Trump wins. “The use of Mr. Springsteen, an iconic artist whose career spans five decades, and former President Obama, still one of the biggest names in Democratic politics, underscores how Ms. Harris’ campaign is gaining momentum ahead of Election Day.” (AP)
These juvenile voters have been sold to Donald Trump since childhood. Here’s how he caught their attention. “Donald Trump will campaign in State College on Saturday, a sign of the importance young voters can play in determining the winner of Pennsylvania.” (Questioner from Philadelphia)
How Jill Stein became the alternative for Arab-American voters. “Many Arab-American voters believe Donald Trump would be worse for their community than Kamala Harris. They said that denying Harris a vote for Stein, even if she helps Trump, will only strengthen their protest voice.” (known)
How Democrats’ voter registration advantage has shrunk in Pennsylvania and what that means for 2024. “As of March 2021, registered Democrats in Pennsylvania outnumbered Republicans by 630,000. On the eve of the 2024 election, that advantage was reduced to 300,000.” (NBC News)

2. Shapiro, Warnock, Duncan State’s Case of Kamala Harris in Lancaster
“On a sun-drenched late October morning in ruby-red Lancaster County, it was Republicans who set the stage for the Democratic powerhouse to make the case for Vice President Kamala Harris.
The 350-person, invitation-only group traveled to a farm in Manheim Township to hear from her Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and former Georgia Republican, Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan” (PolitykaPA)

Shapiro saved Pennsylvania for himself. Can he do the same for Harris? “Since Harris passed him over in her search for a running mate, Shapiro, who is widely said to have presidential ambitions of his own, has become one of her most prominent surrogates, crisscrossing the country from the Midwest to the Deep South to small towns and cities its own critical state, which is the battlefield.” (POLICY)
Would GOP Senate candidate Dave McCormick be a check for Trump – or would he be a rubber stamp? “McCormick has likely been subordinated to a mercurial and supposedly autocratic figure before – as the former CEO of the Bridgewater hedge fund. And judging by the company’s best-known account, Rob Copeland’s Wall Street Journal feature “The Fund,” voters can’t assume it will check even the White House’s outlandish impulses. (WESA policy)
How AP attorney general candidates would work with DA Larry Krasner of Philadelphia. “Whoever becomes attorney general will have to work with one of the state’s most provocative officials: progressive Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.” (Questioner from Philadelphia)
This race could have a greater impact on Pennsylvanians than the presidential election. Can Democrats win? “In a Pennsylvania suburb whose voters are coveted by both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, Nicole Ruscitto went door to door on a dreary Tuesday afternoon telling residents there would be another big race in November.” (Guardian)

3. Shapiro announces $800 million GSK investment in Lancaster County
“Governor Josh Shapiro and GSK management announced a major investment by the global biopharmaceutical company in Pennsylvania of up to $800 million that will expand its research and development (R&D) and manufacturing footprint at its existing facility in Lancaster County.
The Commonwealth is supporting this expansion with a $21 million investment that will create at least 200 modern, well-paid jobs. “This is the largest Commonwealth-backed economic development project in the history of Lancaster County.” (PolitykaPA)
Elsewhere
$87 million federal investment in modern manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania could create nearly 900 jobs. “The funding will come from President Joe Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Republicans opposed, and will help California-based Mainspring Energy build a 292,000-square-foot ‘state-of-the-art’ linear generator plant near Pittsburgh International Airport in Allegheny County.” . (PennLive)
Pennsylvania and federal law enforcement investigate false video spreading misinformation about Bucks County election workers. “Bucks County has contacted law enforcement to investigate a fraudulent video that purports to show an election official tearing up ballots.” (Questioner from Philadelphia)
Signs of the times in Pennsylvania. “My home is Lewisburg, home to Bucknell University (and a federal prison, but that’s not what we’re talking about). It was always a quaint college town, but now it’s gentrified and deep blue; Last time, Biden got 70 percent. But the county is completely red, with a plain dividing town from country where signs dominate roadsides and front yards.” (Nation)
Erie County voters waiting for their ballots should receive them soon. What caused the delay? “Two containers containing approximately 750 absentee ballots intended for Erie County voters were sent from a U.S. Postal Service processing facility in Pittsburgh to the wrong post office, delaying delivery and causing panic among those who still have not received them, according to Erie County Clerk Karen Chillcott.” (Erie Times-News)

5. German police say pizza order number 40 was delivered laced with cocaine
“German police stopped a pizzeria in Düsseldorf in the west of the country that was also supplying cocaine from an additional order when customers asked for item No. 40 on the menu.
“It was one of the best-selling pizzas,” crime director Michael Graf von Moltke – he told reporters in Düsseldorf.
He said police were first notified by suspicious food inspectors in March. When narcotics officers began surveilling the restaurant, they soon discovered why the No. 40 pizza was so popular, Moltke told reporters on Monday, according to German news agency dpa. (AP)
